5 Easy Ways You Can Organise Your Home This Summer

By Laura Anderson

Look around your home right now – how much ‘stuff’ can you see on the floor, or on benches, that just doesn’t belong there? If you’ve never decluttered your home, there are likely a few things you think could live somewhere else.

So, how should you go about organising your home this summer? Take note of the following interior design trends and tips, and you’ll have an organised, stylish home in no time. They might not even take away from your weekends at the beach!

1. TAKE THE CLOTHES HANGER CHALLENGE

An easy way for you to organise your wardrobe is to take the clothes hanger challenge – made famous by Oprah Winfrey. It’s simple, and it’ll make you learn a thing or two about the clothes you wear regularly, and those you don’t really need.

Just put all of your clothes on hangers the wrong way around, and when you wear them the first time, put them back on the hanger the right way. After three months, take out all of the clothes that are still the wrong way around, and give them to charity! Don’t be rash about it though – if you do this challenge over the summer, you’re unlikely to wear winter clothes like coats and jackets, and you’ll need them in the colder months.

2. TAKE FIVE MINUTES OUT OF EACH DAY

Decluttering your home shouldn’t take weeks and weeks – it’s about constantly working to improve how organised your interior space is. When you come home from work, take five minutes to just walk around the house and put things where they need to be. Everyday it might be different, and some days you might not put anything away, but doing small tasks will build up over a week, and eventually your home will hardly have a hair out of place.

3. DON’T MOVE ONTO SOMETHING ELSE BEFORE YOU FINISH THE PREVIOUS TASK!

When you’re cleaning and organising, it can be tempting to stop what you’re doing and move onto another similar task. If you do that 20 times, though, you’ll be left with 20 spaces that are almost clean, but none that are totally organised.

That’s not how you want your home to feel! If you start a task, make sure you finish it completely before you do any other cleaning jobs.

4. ORGANISE YOUR HOME BEFORE YOU BUY NEW STORAGE ITEMS

It might feel necessary to go out and buy lots of storage solutions before you start tidying your home, but that’s not necessarily a good idea. If you buy storage boxes in which to put your clutter, you’ll have a space to dump everything. That means you won’t throw things out that you really should, or that you don’t genuinely have space for.

Don’t create space for clutter – create space so you can be more organised! Buy storage solutions only after you’ve sorted your home, and thrown out all the junk. You’ll probably save money, too.

5. KEEP REVISITING YOUR ORGANISED SPACES

Just because you’ve gone through and decluttered your home once, doesn’t mean you can leave it be for another year. Things get put in the wrong place, and you’ll accumulate gifts and other pieces of clutter that you aren’t going to use, and that you simply don’t want.

Make sure you keep on top of your decluttering, and don’t let your tidy, clean home get out of hand! You’ll have to start again that way, and it’s a big task. Make it easy for yourself by constantly working at it, and your home will always be in tip-top shape.
